Genmaicha & Hōjicha Green Tea
Hōjicha and genmaicha are both revered for their deep, roasted aromas. The toastiness of Hōjicha comes from the leaves, which are roasted after harvesting. This also lowers the caffeine level of the tea, so it is popular at all times of day, by both young and old tea drinkers alike. It makes excellent accompaniments to meals, and due to its digestive properties, it may also be consumed in lieu of coffee at the conclusion of a meal. Genmaicha gets its toastiness from the roasted 'genmai' (brown rice) that is added to the leaves, in an approximate 50-50 ratio. Genmaicha is a revitalizing tea, also lower in caffeine than other types of green tea.
