Gabaron Sencha

Japanese green tea with a high-content γ-amino butyric acid

Gabaron Sencha Gabaron Sencha Gabaron Sencha
Speciality

This Gabaron Tea is exclusively made of first picked leaves grown in Shiga Prefecture, located to the east of Kyoto Prefecture, famous for Uji tea. It is pesticide-and-chemical free.

This special Sencha was named after an amino acid called GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid), a major neurotransmitter of the human central nervous system. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) could act as a blood pressure controller. Its daily consumption might help burn fat and have a beneficial effect on blood pressure or stress issues.

To produce Gabaron tea, they put the freshly picked tea leaves into vacuumed aluminium packages for several hours, and this oxygen free environment naturally increases GABA content in tea leaves. The following process of producing Gabaron tea is the same as Sencha (green tea), and it contains only tea leaves, no other ingredients are added.

Gabaron tea usually has a strong taste, but this particular tea is really easy to drink. Since its leaves are just dried with no additional processing, it's naturally sweet, with no trace of astringency,

The taste of the first infusion is medium umami, slightly sour, slightly melow Slight astringency and light sweetness on the finish. The astringency increases noticeably with higher concentration. Low bitterness.

I was initially drawn to the concept of GABA tea for its calming effects, but I actually really like the flavor as well. This one has a very buttery mouthfeel and earthy and grassy notes. It's very different from all the other sencha I got. I feel like this tea might be a bit more calming than others, but that can very well be placebo.

Brief (few seconds) steeps in 90 Celsius water. Liquor is an opaqued bright yellow in look. Taste is surprisingly mellow and sweet, with no astringency nor bitterness. It has a mild umami-sweet aftertaste that is rather nutty and root vegetable-like. An unexpected taste for a 'sencha' given there is no vegetal note at all, despite the high temperature use for the brew. Mouthfeel is somewhat sticky and dry, encouraging salivation. Wet leaves are mostly muted green leaves with some twigs, giving off a steamed potato aroma. Flavor starts to soften by the 4th infusion, though still no bitterness with a much longer steep (1 minute) in the next infusion. This unusual sencha gives an instant relaxed and sleepy effect.

Enigmatic sencha with out-of-this world taste. Reminds me a wild white tea (Camellia taliensis). It’s fragrant, extra sweet and smooth. The texture is thick and brothy. I brew it in glass, 7 gram for 500 ml 80-85 degrees C and 1 minute the first brew (on the photo).

This tea does not have the best taste, and its a bit bitter and earthy, but I chose to buy it after finding out about gaba tea and wanted to try it out. Although its taste is nothing special, the feeling this tea gives my body and mind during meditation will have me coming back to drink more anyway :) its a subtle carefree feeling that is really nice.
