Special, non-blended, single origin matcha, made of the Asahi tea cultivar
IN STOCK ITEM
“Asahi” (literally meaning “sunrise”) was named after the clear and refreshing color of its made tea. It has been recognized as a high quality tencha (and matcha) over the years and has outranked others in different competitive shows not only in Kansai area but throughout Japan. The matcha named “Mumon” provided by Horii Shichimeien is made from the tealeaves of “Asahi” harvested in the Okunoyama tea garden, which was established in the Ashikaga Period (1336 – 1573).
With its thrillingly rich aroma and full-bodied, unique flavours, this tea is unlike any other. It is an excellent koicha tea, which, even when prepared as usucha (thin tea), shows off koicha (thick tea) traits. This is no run-of-the-mill experience. It is a magical, attention-grabbing brew to sweep you off your feet on festive occasions.
The meaning of Mumon "無門" :
The word "mumon" comes from the Zen word "Daidomumon", which means that anyone can enter the path of enlightenment from anywhere, just as there are no gates or single entryways on a public road. In other words, the meaning of the name ``Mumon'' can be interpreted to mean that there is no specific entrance; this experience is open to everyone.

HOW TO PREPARE
As Usucha:
STEP 1) Put 2g (0.4 US tsp, 1 teaspoon or 2 chashaku scoop) matcha powder into a suitable tea bowl.
STEP 2) Pour 75 ml (2.4 fl oz) 80℃ (176°F) water over the matcha powder.
STEP 3) Whisk with a chasen (tea whisk) until foamy.
As Koicha:
STEP 1) Put 4g (0.8 US tsp, 2 teaspoon or 4 chashaku scoop) matcha powder into a suitable tea bowl.
STEP 2) Pour 30 ml (1 fl oz) 80℃ (176°F) water over the matcha powder.
STEP 3) Gently mix with a chasen (tea whisk) until creamy.
❖ Before Step 1, warm up the tea bowl with hot water, then dry it with a cloth to create the perfect temperature so make the most delicious matcha with a fresh scent while preparing.
❖ To prevent clotting of the matcha powder, sift it through a fine strainer before use.
❖ After the matcha is done, drink it immediately, because as it cools down it gets more and more bitter.
❖ Freshness is the most important thing for the enjoyment of Matcha. It is best to use up the tea within one month of opening.

Exceptional matcha! I ordered a few matcha tea and tried them blindly, this one came out to be on my top two! Very light matcha and no bitterness! For the price, it's really worth it!

As usucha: the tea froths quickly, the foam has the colour of green peas. The bitterness of the infusion is lower but noticeable, trace astringency, umami medium, taste of fresh green pea soup, hazelnuts + herbs. There is a surprising medium to strong sweetness in the aftertaste, which is quite decent in length. As koicha: noticeably bitter, umami, reminiscent of dark high-percentage chocolate with a soup of fresh green peas and herbs. Pretty good matcha, but I'm not sure about the price/performance ratio.

I do not have much experience with matcha tea, but this tea is absolutely great! I can recommend it to everyone who wants to get the best experience with real Japanese matcha tea.

I've tried a LOT of matcha and this is a nice matcha. I drink it as Usucha primarily. I like my matcha strong so I add about three scoops to 50-60 ml of 70 C water. It foams up really well. The powder is very light and airy and a very nice deep green. The aroma of the dry powder is rather light. The finished usucha is medium bodied with just a slight bitterness that I find pleasant. It's quite smooth and mellow at the same time. I like it but it's not my all time favorite. Very well made matcha overall. In case you're curious, the matcha bowl was purchased at Sazen: Hira Chawan Oribe Matsumoto Tetsuzan and it is a pleasure to drink from.

I just received my order about 15 minutes ago and prepared in-between koicha and usucha style for my favorite preperation. 160 degree spring water. It is good -- very good. BUT it is not what I look for in matcha. I found this varietal to be mild, light, smooth and slightly creamy. It takes a few moments for the flavors to develop on the tongue after swallowing -- faint floral flavors emerge in the background. Very unique and light. It seems to lack the more savory and umami-laden richness of the Narino. The color is a nice bright green, although I was hoping for a more rich and intoxicating aroma, and a stronger flavor -- that is what I like. All things considered -- if one like lighter matcha -- perhaps someone new to matcha -- this is a good one.

At first the taste is soft, mellow and creamy, then slowly develops into a full-bodied, rich flavor. Very delicious!

This matcha had such a great aroma when I opened the bag in the tin. The froth when making usucha is a much lighter green than any matcha I have had before. It has complex flavors when as thicker tea that linger on the tongue. Tea time!

This is my favorite matcha so far, even better than the more expensive ones. I can't describe it better than Sazen: "thrillingly rich aroma and full-bodied, unique flavours". I would emphasize: "thrilling", rather mind-blowing.
