Celadon Hiradoyaki handmade tea bowl from Yokoishi Kasuke
This celadon tea bowl is a replica of a historical tea bowl known as “Renbenmonwan”. Several similar bowls have been unearthed in Japan. The original prototype was crafted in Longquan, China, during the Song Dynasty (13th-14th century), and one of these historical import bowls is now part of the Tokyo National Museum's collection as an important cultural property.
The tea bowl is decorated with lotus flower. Lotus, the flower that rises from murky waters is a gorgeous symbol of purity, both of the body and the mind. Of all lotuses, white is the emblem of spiritual perfection and total purity. It is the flower of Buddha, he often appears with lotuses, sitting on or surrounded by them.
The tea bowl comes in a paulownia wooden box signed by the master.
About Hiradoyaki:
In the 17th century, the Hirado daimyo family established a village of Korean potters and utilized their kilns to produce high-quality porcelain ware, which was then presented as diplomatic gifts to other lords, the shogun, or even the emperor.
The Hirado kilns became renowned for their white and celadon (Seiji) glazed porcelain. The distinctive jade green color of celadon is created by iron oxide in the glaze or clay, fired in a reduction chamber at temperatures of at least 1200°C. Celadon porcelain gained popularity during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) in China, particularly among scholars and intellectuals, and it spread to Japan around the 11th century.
