BAKOHAN REPLICA - Celadon porcelain tea bowl by Master Yokoishi Kasuke
This celadon tea bowl is a duplicate of the well-known Seiji chawan also known as “Bakohan” made in Longquan, China during the Song Dynasty. The original tea bowl now belongs in the Tokyo National Museum as an important cultural property.
Hiradoyaki hand made product by Yokoishi Kasuke, from Nagasaki.
The tea bowl comes with a wooden box signed by the master.
In the 17th century, the Hirado daimyo family established a village of Korean potters and used their kilns for ordering the highest quality porcelain ware as diplomatic gifts for other lords, the shogun or the emperor himself.
The Hirado kilns specialized in white and celadon - Seiji - glazed porcelain. This beautiful jade green color is produced by iron oxide in the glaze or clay fired in a reducing atmosphere kiln, at minimum 1200°C. Celadon porcelain became popular during the Tang Dynasty (618-907, China) especially among Literati and intellectuals. In Japan it got spread after the 11th century.
