Leaf-tea storage jar from Bizen
This chatsubo is a Bizen stoneware, made of a special clay that can be mined only in Bizen area, in Okayama prefecture. The finish was achieved with Hidasuki technique. Before the final firing, the jar is wrapped in rice straws, and as the straws burn, they react with the iron in the clay resulting in unique scarlet patterns.

The finishing clay looks nicely hand-turned and aesthetically pleasing. Its weight indicates the ceramic wall is not a thin one. Overall size is large enough to hold an ample amount of non-japanese loose leaf teas as well. Cork lid doesn't provide a super air-tight seal, thus I prefer to use this for storing darker teas or deep roasted teas or aged/fermented teas.
