Tokoname handmade teacup by Jin Tanikawa
Tanikawa Jin's artwork.
The tea cup, as its name - hakudei - suggests, is made of white clay. The pattern on the surface is achieved with "Mogake technique" developed back in the 19th century. The teapot is wrapped with Amamo seaweed, which reacts with the clay and oxidizes during firing. The result is this unique pattern, bearing the impression of randomness, which has both aesthetic and philosophical appeal to the Japanese.
Place of origin: Tokoname, Japan

Initiation:
Before first use, rinse it with hot water, then let it dry completely!
Usage:
Avoid placing it on hot surfaces, like stove, and never use in microwave or oven.
Cleaning:
It is better to avoid dishwashing liquid, but you can use gentle, organic soap to clean the cup. Never use bleach!
Avoid using dishwasher or dryer!
Storage:
After use, always let it dry completely, for if stored away while still wet, it might develop an unpleasant smell or mold.
Unglazed ceramic cups absorb scents and flavors, so only drink one kind of tea from them (green tea, black tea, roasted tea, etc).

These are beautiful small handmade tea cups and they are all unique. Sazen was happy to take the time to send photos of their stock and allow me to pick the ones I liked the most. They are the right size to drink tea after pouring without it being too hot. And the traditional craftsmanship makes them something to treasure and take special care of. It's worthwhile to sometimes treat yourself to a high quality item that you know you'll make good use of.
