Waste-water container from the Shōtōen kiln
"Kensui" is a vessel used in Japanese tea ceremony for disposing of the water used to rinse and purify tea utensils. It plays an important role in both "sado" (matcha tea ceremony) and "senchado" (sencha tea ceremony).
The kensui is decorated with stripes recalling "tokusa", the so-called rough horsetail which is a popular plant in traditional Japanese gardens.

After use, always let it dry completely, for if stored away while still wet, it might develop an unpleasant smell or mold.
