Handmade, glass candy container
This "furidashi" - candy container - is used in Japanese tea ceremony. Traditionally it is for the tiny hard candies called konpeito. The glass surface is incised with a diamond wheel, and is entirely handmade. This bluish purple color is called "edomurasaki"., because the shade was first developed in Edo.
This outstanding glass work technique is called "Edokiriko", and was first produced in Edo, the modern day Tokyo. The idea of the method came all the way from the Netherlands, one of the very few countries Japan was trading during most of the Edo period. Japanese craftsmen were determined to recreate the dazzling design of import glasses, so in the latter part of the Edo period, they developed their own "kiriko" - "cut glass" method. The technique kept improving with the help of English craftsmen and integrated into Japanese traditional arts during the Meiji period.
The stopper is cork wrapped in corn leaf.
The furidashi comes in a paper gift box.
