This tea bowl stand is originally used in the most elegant "temae" - tea ceremony styles. The ceremony host serves the high-ranking guests offering the bowl of tea placed on a "tenmokudai". Although it has its own meaning and functions in tea ceremonies, it can be also used as a tea bowl display stand.
It is carved from wood, which is covered with a fine black urushi lacquer layer. The finish is thanks to a final polishing when the lacquer surface is scrubbed with powdered deer antler.
It is called Tenmokudai because it is made for the "tenmoku-gata", tenmoku-style tea bowls. (It is not suitable for tea bowls other than "tenmoku-gata". For a reference, see the picture below.). It is suitable for the Chawan Taihi Tenmoku Umon, the Yōhen Yuteki Tenmoku Chawan, and the Yuteki Tenmoku Chawan.
The tenmokudai comes in a paulownia box signed by the master.
The tea bowl is a different product, You can purchase it here.
