The chawan is made with a special double-glazing technique. After applying the first coat of glaze the master removes it in random places and then applies a clear glaze coating. "Taihi" refers to the pattern of the Hawksbill turtle.
Inside two phoenixes decorate the bowl. Phoenix is an auspicious symbol borrowed from China. It represents great luck and peace. The phoenixes here were made with a special technique. The artist first draws the figures and makes forms of them. Then, he pastes the forms to the wall of the bowl, applies the glaze, and before the second, transparent glazing, removes the forms. That is what makes the phoenixes so vivid, as if on fire.
Tenmoku glaze got its name from a remote Chinese temple it was first used, on the Tianmu (Tenmoku in Japanese and Heaven's Eye in English) Mountain. From the 13th century, monks in this temple drank their tea from tea bowls glazed with a special technique called yuteki (literally meaning “oil drop”). Tenmoku glazes can range in color and pattern, which makes every glazed piece unique with the impression of randomness, which has both aesthetic and philosophical appeal to the Japanese.
