Kōcha Hōjicha is made of Ohmi black tea from Tsuchiyama city, Shiga Prefecture. The characters of black tea are definitely forward here. This tea is a real treat in its complexity. It's fruity and amazingly sweet, candy cane and honey notes present in both the fragrance and the flavor. The taste reminds of sweet Japanese pickles and poppy cake.
Thanks to the deep roasting, hōjicha is low in caffeine and gentle to the stomach. It is ideal for the elderly and children as well.

How to prepare
6 g 0.2 oz 1.4 US tsp
95°C 203°F
250 ml 8.5 fl oz 250 cc
30 sec.~
STEP 1) Fill your pot with tea leaves in a 6g/200-250ml ratio.
STEP 2) Cool boiled water down to 95℃ (203ºF), pour it on the leaves, and brew for 30 seconds.
STEP 3) Serve. Pour an equal amount of tea into the cups.
STEP 4) Brew again.
Loose leaf smells like dark chocolate, which was really nice. I was excited to try it, but actually drinking it was a different experience. It was too bitter with a strong aftertaste. Not even sugar or milk could make it palatable. I adjusted the amount, steep time, etc, but nothing saved this tea for me.
Perhaps roasted black tea just might not be for me.

Absolutely delicious. The roasted aroma and flavour is perfect and not at all overwhelming. I was worried it would end up smokier in taste, but that is definitely not the case.
The colour (as I brewed it) is quite a bit darker than what is shown on the photos, but I brewed in a mug rather than teapot, so odds are if i drank from a small teacup it would appear lighter.
I would happily order this again in the future, for a unique black tea.
