Handmade teacup from the Enzan Kiln
A handmade and hand-painted Kutaniyaki teacup from the Enzan Kiln.
They say the long, freezing, and colorless winters of the Hokuriku region made locals crave colors and thus, Kutaniyaki, the traditional ceramic style of the region was born. Kutaniyaki is using vivid and bold colors, the so-called "gosaide" (五彩手), five main colors, including green, blue, yellow, purple, and red.
The decoration on this tea cup is called "Saishiki Kinrande" (彩色金蘭手) that usually includes four main motives: imaginary flowers, birds, people, and landscapes. The over-glazing technique used for this cup is called the "Shoza style".
There are six different over-glazing techniques in Kutani ware, and the Shoza style is blending all of them. This means that we can find the influence of Chinese ink paintings of the Mokubei style, the bold colors of the Yoshidaya style, the gold coating of the Eiraku style, and the momentary scenes of the Iidaya style. Shoza was introduced in the early Meiji period and influenced by both traditional Japanese, Chinese, and Western visual styles and motives.
