Japanese hanging scroll with hand-painted moonlit scenery by Uemura Yoneshige, and Hashimoto Jōshō
This hanging scroll, depicting a man on a boat, rowing under the full Moon, is a hand-painted, original work of master Uemura Yoneshige, an established ink and kimono painter. The calligraphy was painted by Hashimoto Jōshō, the head priest of the Hotokuji temple in Nara.
Hanging scrolls were originally hung in temples, and then in the "tokonoma" - alcove displaying ornaments - of the Japanese tea room. This delicately painted, serene scroll lives up to its title, "Silence", bringing a calm, meditative atmosphere to any space.
The scenery is painted on paper, and framed by three kinds of fabrics: simple, blank cotton, called Watashina, Kibune damask, and Takeya silk. "Takeyama Jikindan", the golden embroidered silk got its name from Takeyama street, famous for its fascinating, arabesque-pattern fabrics in Kyoto since the Muromachi era.
The scroll comes in a paulownia wooden box.

The hanging scroll is made of fine fabrics and paper. Always handle it carefully with clean hands.
If you would like to store it away, roll it up slowly and carefully either still hanging on the wall or laid out on the floor. Try to touch only the wooden handles. Fold the two hanging silk stripes under the rolled-up scroll, and protect them with the yellow sheet included in the box. Finally to secure it, wrap the scroll with the string. (See the picture below.)
