Seasonality

Nakamura Ryouji's artwork.

Matcha bowl for summer coated with ash glaze. "Hira" chawan are flat and wide, commonly used in summer, because thanks to their shape, matcha cools easier in them. Hira chawan are often decorated with summer motives, and Chawan Kaiyū Ayu is no exception. The light blue brush strokes immediately recall the faint color of summer waters, while sasa leaves and ayu fishes are popular summer symbols.

As the season of ayu, also known as sweetfish starts in late spring, and early summer, ayu is a sweet sign of summer in Japan. Ayu-shaped sweets, ayu pattern seasonal tableware, or tea ware are sold everywhere throughout the season.

Handling precautions

Initiate the tea bowl first! Let the bowl sit wholly immersed in cold or lukewarm water for a couple of minutes and then let it dry naturally. Matcha patina is natural for white clay, but by initiating the bowl properly, it will develop slower.

After using the tea bowl, rinse it with water. It is better to avoid dishwashing liquid, but you can use gentle, organic soap to clean your bowl. Never use bleach!
Avoid using a dishwasher or dryer!

Avoid placing it on hot surfaces like a stove, and never put it in the microwave or oven.

Only prepare matcha tea in it.
