In the Southern part of Kyoto Prefecture, in Wazuka there is a tea farm mainly known for its delicious sencha. The farmers however came up with an idea 10 years ago and just to see how it would turn out started to process the leaves of the local native tea bushes. These tea bushes that have been growing in the area organically for decades, but at least 10 years, are called "Zairai". "Zairai" is not a particular cultivar but a hybrid of several different cultivars changing over time, but originating from Yunnan, China. In the grand scheme of things, these trees are not native to Kyoto, but by now they are still considered indigenous. The Wazuka farmers' idea proved to be a good one, Wazuka Yūki Oolong Cha is the one we can celebrate their efforts in.

The bushes that give the leaves for the Wazuka oolong are all around 50 years old. As they are relatively old (tea trees between 5-20 years old are harvested in Japan), their roots are long and extensive, absorbing a lot more nutrients from the soil than their younger peers. The rich, deep flavor is thanks to all these factors. The tea is pesticide and chemical free and meets the Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS).

Roasty, toasty, and complex at a price that lets you drink it every day! I'm not a big drinker of oolongs but this tea is quickly changing that one cup at a time. I currently have this and an expensive Taiwanese oolong in my rotation and this is the one I favor, because the roasty flavors and darker oxidized leaf is similar to my favorite black teas with a hint of green flavor to round it out. This would be a great tea to have with food as the flavor will not clash with sweet or salty and isn't so strong it overloads your palate. Easily goes multiple steeps and develops and changes as you go. This tea makes an ideal "all day drinker" if you are someone that keeps a cup and pot at your side.

Liquor is light yellow turning amber with subsequent brews. The leaves are aromatic with a pleasing milky aroma with a distinct mineral 'afternote'. As a drinker of rock teas, this feels bland on the first brew but becomes more flavorful with more mouthfuls. On subsequent brews, the mineral nature of the tea becomes more prominent and inherent flavors become more distinct. A pleasing light Oolong to enjoy during a quiet afternoon.

Unmistakably oolong. This tea made the first impression of red (aka. black) tea but it's true identity is definitely oolong, creamy milky texture with fruity aroma and quick returning sweetness with some malty tone especially in first two infusions. Deep baking also resulted in coffee notes in the finish.

A medium roasted oolong with a sweet aroma and after taste. Liquor is clear and deep golden in color tone, slightly oily in mouthfeel. One gets to taste the toasty aroma that is balanced, not overwhelming. The toastiness in the brew is both nutty and fruity sweet. Wet leaves have both green and copper tones, giving off a sugary-nutty aroma. I think this could also work nicely if made into iced tea.

A very unique and appealing flavor, not quite like any oolong I have tasted. Has a Japanese character despite being an oolong.

This tea is such a surprise! It's very hard to find a Japanese oolong and even harder to have the chance to try an organic one (organic tea farming in Japan is really a challenge!). I appreciate the hardwork the farmer did to create a tea so special, so different from anything else. The leaves are beautifully curled, with spiky and reddish edges. This oolong is sweet, velvety and round, with notes of dryed peach and roasted chestnut. Perfect to drink in autumn.

I bought this tea out off curiosity. Now I know it is excellent. Delicate and tasteful. Oolong but Japanese . Perfect when I want to experience going to a place that helps to balance my mood in the afternoon.

A tea balanced to a Japanese style preference. Nice roasted flavor with a very mild undercurrent of stone fruit. Holds for many infusions. A mild astringency. Almost the opposite of many Taiwanese oolongs.
