Speciality

This Susudake Chashaku is made of bamboo that had been used for the frames and roof timbers of a 100 to 200 year-old traditional houses. Susudake (literally meaning “smoked bamboo”) got its name from its unique color. Due to constant exposure to the smoke from the "irori" (the traditional Japanese hearth) its color turns reddish brown. Susudake Chashaku Tokujō is carved from carefully selected bamboo with the most gorgeous color tones.

There are less and less houses where susudake bamboo can be taken from, so this interesting and unique chashaku is becoming increasingly rare.

Handling precautions

Cleaning:
After use, some matcha powder might stick to the scoop. To clean it, always use a dry cloth. Bamboo is extremely sensitive to moisture. If you clean it with a wet cloth, the water and the matcha powder seep into the material and damage it. Make sure you keep it dry!

Do not expose it to direct sunlight for too long!

This Chashaku is absolutely stunning and will likely only increase in value as they become harder to source. How they achieve this finish is also very interesting and makes the experience of making your matcha feel even more special. It's also a great little conversation tidbit; "you know, to get this finish it takes over 100 years of..." etc. which will either leave your guests wide eyed and fascinated, or potentially guide them into a deep sleep. If it's the latter, that means more matcha for you. Both outcomes are a win.
