Hishaku is a tea utensil traditionally used at tea ceremonies to ladle hot water from the kettle. It has a long handle and a dipper, which can hold the exact amount of water that's needed for usucha (thin tea). It doesn't only make the tea sessions atmospheric and authentic, but it is also practical. When 80% full, it is the right amount of water for an usucha, when half full, it carries the ideal amount for a koicha (thick tea).
This hishaku can be used for both sunken hearth ("ro") and portable brazier ("furo"). "Ro" hishaku is for the sunken hearth that is used in autumn and winter. On a Ro hishaku the cut at the end will be on the top of the handle, or the skin side of the handle. Furo hishaku is used in spring and summer and has a straight cut at the end of the handle.

Handling precautions
INITIATION:
Before first use, rinse it with hot water and let it dry naturally.
CLEANING:
Use it only for water. Hishaku doesn't need much cleaning, as only used for water, but always make sure it dries completely before storing it away.
Do not use dishwasher, dryer or dish soap!
Never let it soak in water.
STORAGE
Store it in a place with good ventilation and humidity not lower than 50%. Bamboo is a sensitive material. If the ladle is stored away in a too warm and too dry place, it might crack.
I will say very briefly - high quality and the best price.

This is a very well made bamboo Furo Hishaku. I use it to ladle hot water for my matcha from my tea kettle into my bowl. It transfers the water without cooling down the water. I measured how much water I needed first and poured it into the Hishaku so I would know how much I would need. I use it every day and LOVE IT! It dries really fast too.
