Yamanaka Nuri lacquer canister from Fukui prefecture
This Natsume (棗) is a hand-crafted matcha container by Issei Minowa, a traditional Maki-e artist from Sabae city, Fukui prefecture.
It is said that 1,300 years ago, on the peaks of Horai-san (mountain) lived an ascetic monk. The myth of Mt Horai originates from Chinese mythology and is about an enchanted island with magical, healing powers and a "levitating" monk.
In Japanese illustrations, often it is shown as a mountain on the back of a sea turtle swimming in the sea, with cranes flying around it. As cranes also refer to hope, success and good fortune, this illustration appears a lot in ceremonies and celebrations around New Years.
Natsume is a tea ceremony tool, made to hold the matcha needed for the ceremony. While preparing for the ceremony, the tea master scoops the needed amount of matcha powder into the natsume. Since it is not for storage but to present the matcha to the guests, it has a loose lid that is easy to remove and is not airtight.
