Ohmi Sencha Asanoka

Single origin green tea of harvest

Ohmi Sencha Asanoka Ohmi Sencha Asanoka Ohmi Sencha Asanoka

Asanoka is a tea cultivar created in 1953 by crossing Yabukita and a Chinese tea tree cultivar. It was only registered in 1996, so it is relatively new, and also very rare.

Asanoka is endearingly sweet, with a hint of mild, refreshing astringency spicing up this sweetness at the end. It is exceptionally rich in umami and has an astonishing floral scent, which is a unique character most senchas do not have, thus to fully enjoy its exclusive and complex character, we recommend you to drink it as it is, without blending it with other cultivars.

Origin: Tongu, Tsuchiyama-Cho, Koka-shi, Shiga Prefecture
Altitude: 300 meters
Picking time: middle of May 2022
Cultivation method: grown in direct sunlight
Temperature for roasting: 70-80℃

Ohmi tea has great prestige and is loved by many for its rich flavor and fragrance, which are brought about by the rich nature, plenty of sunshine and the beautiful water and air from the surrounding Suzuka mountains.

As the legend goes, the history of the cultivation of tea in this area dates back to the period of the Northern and Southern Courts (1356), when a Zen monk, Donoh of Minami Tsuchiyama Johmyo-Ji Temple brought some tea seeds from Daitoku-Ji Temple in Kyoto to his temple and began to grow tea plants. It was in the Edo period that the production and sales of tea started on a full scale. An advanced tea-producing technology was adopted at an early stage and tea produce was sold as one of the local products along the main roads. Since the local climate and soil were fit for the production of tea, it became an export product in the Meiji period and its production volumes increased substantially.

This is a really good tea, very flavourful. It gets pretty hefty when you let it steep for 60 seconds. I tried 45 seconds and it's a little bit more subtle.

Da******, 2023-06-03 03:56 JST,

I love this tea. I have ordered it multiple times. However, it is VERY umami rich, which makes me wonder if it is a sencha at all. It really tastes (and feels) like a kabusecha. I'm not sure if that flavor is possible unless it has been grown under shade for some time. This would be my favorite "sencha" as I have not tasted any like it, but again it makes me wonder if it's because I'm comparing apples to oranges. Someone more experienced would perhaps be more qualified on this point.
